Borderlands

Well, I think I may be on the route to recovery as far as my writing goes; I've been a little more clear-headed the last couple days thanks to a weekend where I actually didn't have anything else to do. Plus, I beat Borderlands yesterday, so there's one distraction gone.
My opinion of the game? Well...contrary to the mostly rave reviews, I wasn't that impressed. Calling it a first-person RPG is kind of a joke in my opinion. Yeah, you can level up, and yeah, you have quests. But, you don't have multiple story paths, or choices when doing quests besides "Do I want to sneak in and snipe, or go in guns and bombs a blazing?". And all the quests are pretty much the same. You either have to collect things from enemies or from places enemies are swarming, kill boss creatures, or run and talk to this person or that person...for more of the same quests.
The highlights of the game are the opening video, some of the boss intros and fights, which were rather intense and rewarding, the interesting player characters (Brick is hilarious when he rages, and Mordecai's Bloodwing is just devastating at higher levels. Lilith is nice eye candy, though I haven't played her or Roland much), and the MASSIVE weapon diversity. Yes, there are hundreds of different weapons, and no two that you find, even if they have the same name, are guaranteed to have the same stats. The downside is the small as hell inventory (starts at 12 slots, goes up to 42 if you rescue all these little robots called Claptraps, which are awesome), and the lack of a place to store your stuff; you have to sell what you can't carry.
This game sort of feels like a FPS/MMO game, and even adopts WoW's item value system (the low end starts at white, and goes up to green, blue, purple, and orange, for an 'epic' item). It is certainly designed to be an online game primarily, but since I could honestly care less about online play, the single-player was mostly tedious and got boring somewhere after starting the quests in New Haven. Everything seemed to be more or less the same quest, just in different areas with somewhat different enemies. The somewhat interesting storyline started to die out at this point, and the enemies just kept getting tougher and tougher, and came in wave after wave. I've heard several comments along the lines of "this game is Fallout 3 without the boring!". Honestly, I've never been bored with Fallout 3; I got bored with Borderlands pretty early on once all the quests were revealed to be the same as the one I just did an hour ago. If you like WoW, yeah, you could enjoy this game, but since I'm burned on WoW, well...
Overall, it's worth at least a rental, but I feel disappointed that I actually bought it. On the upside, whenever I've got a buddy over, we can hop on and do split-screen co-op, which is always enjoyable. So yeah, at least rent it, but I wouldn't call it anything particularly groundbreaking or extremely exciting. I enjoy the storyline of games more than most things, and while this one started off okay, it was bogged down and may as well not even ended, because the ending WAS NOT worth the hours invested. Dragon Age Origins seems to be a lot more enjoyable so far...
